Johl Whiteduck-Ringuette
Johl Whiteduck Ringuette is Anishinawbe and Algonquin. He was born North of North Bay, Ontario and his grandmother is from Nippissing First Nations. His clan is Mink clan, the bringer of things, protector of community, a warrior clan and responsible for economic development.
Johl’s work for the past 30 years reveals the experience of retrieving his community’s Indigenous culture and identity: through writing, through photography, through visual art, mixed media, food and culinary arts, agroecology, garden design, singing, dance, and teaching, he finds the experience of art through reclamation of his culture.
Johl launched the Indigenous Harvesters and Artisans Market at the Bickford Centre in 2018 and 2019, with multiple partnerships, where he curated a series of murals painted by Indigenous artists. Through this initiative he is the founder of RUN the Red Urban Nation artists collective. A live interactive art exhibition featuring Johl's culinary arts appeared at Karsh Masson Gallery in Ottawa in 2015, titled BioART; Collaborating with Life. Johl received Aboriginal Businessman of the Year award in 2013.
